Eugene "Clay" Clayton III

of Kerrville, TX

November 12, 1962 - November 10, 2022

  • Obituary
  • Guestbook
Our beloved Dr. Eugene ''Clay'' Clayton, of Kerrville, Texas, left us entirely too early to be with his Lord on November 10, 2022, two days shy of his sixtieth birthday.

Clay was born in Dallas on November 12, 1962, to Carolynn and Eugene Clayton, Jr. He attended Hillcrest High School before going to the University of Texas at Austin to study chemical engineering. He attended medical school at UT Southwestern, then completed his anesthesiology residency at Parkland before moving to Kerrville in 1995. He married the love of his life, Monica, on January 8, 2000.

Clay is fondly remembered for his rapid-fire speaking style, his tender heart beneath a gruff exterior, his love for his family, his intellectual curiosity, his kind and direct manner with patients, his faith in Jesus, his regular study of the Bible, his goofy antics, and his charismatic energy that cheered and enlivened all who were with him. He exhorted his children to give their best effort to every endeavor. He was a do-it-yourself fanatic, often lamenting the back problems that resulted from the early years of ambitious projects. He could converse about medicine, history, economics, religion, and conspiracy theories, and he was genuinely humble about his vast store of general knowledge. He loved to walk and was the researcher and planner for yearly pilgrimages and treks overseas with family and friends.

He was predeceased by his father Eugene. He is survived by his wife Monica, children Alix, Caleb, Joshua, Jordan, and Emma Kate, also by his mother Carolynn, sister Christi Korzekwa (Don), sister Chase Bain (James), and brother Casey Clayton.

Visitation will be Wednesday, November 16th from 5 to 7 p.m. at Grimes Funeral Chapels in Kerrville.

Memorial service and mass will be at Notre Dame Catholic Church on Friday, November 25th at 10 a.m.

I truly have no words to describe how much I will miss you Dr Clayton. You were an awesome Dr, friend, and colleague. I will miss our intellectual and spiritual conversations which always impacted my life in so many ways and always when I needed it most. My heart hurts for you Monica, and your family. Please know that you will always be in my prayers. Your husband touched and changed many lives and he was a warrior for The Kingdom. Until we meet again my friend… Todd Lovelady

Such a shocking reminder to love and live everyday. Dr. Clayton was an amazing mentor and friend for so many years and I cherish the time we spent working together in the OR. His corky personality and quick wit always made the day better and he always had some words of wisdom for me. Few people cared for others the way he did and he will be sorely missed. My prayers go out to Monica and the kids.

Farewell to our friend & colleague, who we will miss terribly. We know you are in eternal peace with the Devine Creator of all things good. Your unexpected & sudden passing has served as a reminder to all who knew you, that we should love each other while it is still possible. May your family know that we have no better way to honor you than to be there for them in this & future times of need.

I’ll never forget him!! I loved going to see him for my shots. So much fun to talk to and had some meaningful conversations. He was like no Doctor I have ever been to. He had great wit! His staff was wonderful also. I can never forget how he would tell me every step he was was going through to deliver a shot in my neck and back. His word was ouchy when the needle went in. Always concerned and caring and without a question I always had faith in her s precise abilities. There is no replacement for him and I did get to speak to him on his faith. My words to him. Well done ! God will finish the rest. He will be missed!!! 🙏

Dr. Clayton took care of my husband before he died a year ago and he did my IV medication when I had surgery. We were both so comfortable with him and trusted him with our care. He had such a great bedside manner and is a great loss to our community. Prayers for his family and comfort knowing he is in a beautiful place.

Dr Clayton was an outstanding physician and always
had time to answer any and all questions his patients
might have

He was an endearing man and tried to make his
patients as comfortable and pain free as he could

I know he is with our Lord and all the heavenly host
singing songs of praise

It was an honor and a blessing to have him as one of
my doctors

May God Bless the family and give them peace

The world lost a special person last week. Clay was my close friend through medical school and my roommate in residency. Anyone who knows Clay can imagine what kind of shenanigans occurred during those times. We’ve fallen out of touch as people do, but it was always nice knowing he out there giving someone well deserved grief. I’ve never known anyone quite like Clay and doubt that I ever will again. Godspeed my friend and don’t be too hard on them up there.

The death of this amazing human being is so difficult to process. Dr. Clayton was a one of a kind. The obituary is a perfect description of his character, and he was not only a character, but a Godly man who truly wanted the best for his patients. His absence will be a real void to our community. May he RIP.

I was privileged to work with Dr. Clayton at Peterson, but he was also my physician, he using humor and discussion of heavy metal bands to ease my nerves during epidural for back pain. I'm so saddened to learn of his passing. May angels of comfort surround his family, and may he rest in peace.

I have know this wonderful man since he arrived in Kerrville. I was a nurse in the intensive care unit at the hospital. My fondest memory of him is when he first started at the hospital. I was going through cancer treatment and had lost much of my hair. I wore a bandana over my very short hair. One day he came through the unit and commented on the bandana. The next day he came through wearing a bandana. He was my pain doctor, but I thought of him as a friend. He will be missed

Dr. Clayton,
So many memories come to mind. You were the most genuine and humble physician who cared so deeply for your patients and staff. I’m so blessed to have been able to work with you. You saved me and brought me to KSC. You were my mentor, friend, and a father figure to me. I’m greatful for the time I had to work with you. Rest with Jesus, I can only imagine the conversations you’re having in Heaven!

Monica and family, my prayers are with you!

Eternal rest grant unto him, oh Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. Amen.

We will sure miss Dr Clayton--he took such wonderful care of my mom and her terrible back for the past 20+ years. I will miss his funny humor when he was in my office while we inspected or worked on his cars---I will always remember "the van" that revved up when he would start it--he always said it was the "dump or haul van"--he would tell us it scared him so he would make the kids stay back when he would start it---he loved his family so much--I know you must have many wonderful memories with him Hugs to everyone! Wow! I am in shock...I just saw Doc 3 weeks ago when I had my cataract surgery. Great man and a great physician. In the summer of 2018 he took one look at my husband's MRI and knew he had a stroke marker or a lesion on his brain. He treated my husband for the pain in his neck but knew without a shadow of a doubt there was something else going on. Part of the story of David's journey included Clay and how much he cared about making sure David was taken care of. He always said I need to bring my car buy the shop. Monica my prayers are for you and your family, gone too soon. May you find comfort surrounded by your friends and family and may you find peace in the arms of God. Remember to "Be Still" and know that he is God and he is there for you. May you feel his grace and mercy in the days to come. My heartfelt sympathy for your loss. Denise LeMeilleur
