Hazel A. Oehler

Hazel Alice Oehler, 101, of Kerrville, passed away Sunday, January 16, 2022.

Hazel was born September 23, 1920, in Fredericksburg, Texas, one of five children born to Alva Lee Burrier and Olga Clara Bernhard Burrier. She became a telephone operator after graduating from Fredericksburg High School, then worked as a secretary at Charles Schreiner Bank, Kerrville for many years.

She married Frank Stevenson on October 4, 1946. They were married for 18 years before Frank’s passing in June 1965. Hazel was a member of First United Methodist Church of Kerrville, Keystone Sunday School Class, past president of UMW, delegate to Southwest Texas Annual Conference and UMW Conference as well as serving on the Administrative Board. She lovingly served as an usher and greeter at FUMC for many years, being awarded the 1996 District Discipleship Award for her outstanding service. Hazel enjoyed volunteer work at Hilltop Village for 17 years and as a Gray Lady at the VA Hospital following WWII. She was a charter member of the Hill Country Cattlewomen, past office holder of Hill Country Chapter of the Sheep and Goat Raisers’ Auxiliary and Cowboy Campmeeting Association Auxiliary, serving in various offices. She enjoyed playing with her domino group, reading and working crossword puzzles.

Hazel married Carl A. Oehler in Kingsland, Texas on January 20, 1970. They enjoyed 17 years together on the 777 Ranch at Mountain Home, Texas before Carl’s passing in September 1987.

She is survived by step-sons, Steve Oehler and wife Darlya of McKinney, Donald Oehler of Mountain Home; grandchildren, Wade Oehler and wife Michelle of Plano, Dr. Elizabeth Oehler and wife Leigh Ann Gaunnt of Center Point, Paul Joseph Oehler and wife, Rebecca Loebe of Center Point, Amy Oehler Mangini and husband Drew of Houston, Melissa Oehler Blanding and husband Chris of Austin and Hailey Oehler McMinn and husband Trey of Kerrville; great-granddaughters, Ellis Jade Oehler of Plano, Ella Claire, Caroline and Abigail Blanding of Austin; great-grandsons, Oehler Ott and Otto Real McMinn of Kerrville; along with several nephews and nieces.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, Alva and Olga Burrier; step-daughters, Janis Stevenson Carney of Boran, California and Joetta Stevenson Cochran of Palmdale, California; brothers, Alva Lee Burrier Jr. of Fredericksburg and Travis C. Burrier of San Antonio; sisters, Lucille Keese of San Antonio and Valma Leazar of Waco; grandson, Justin Ross Oehler of Mountain Home; and step-son, Bruce D. Oehler of Mountain Home.

Visitation will be held from 4-6 PM, Thursday, January 20, 2022 at Grimes Funeral Chapels.

Services will be held at 10 AM, Friday, January 21, 2022 at First United Methodist Church of Kerrville, officiated by Rev. Donna Magee. Interment will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Wade Oehler, Drew Mangini, Trey McMinn, Chris Blanding, Mark Leazar and Lark Leazar.

Honorary pallbearers are Delbert Oehler, Samuel Oehler, P.J. Oehler, Tom Nemky, David Lee, Charlie Bierschwale, David Holland and Don Hainlen.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be give in Hazel’s name to First United Methodist Church, 321 Thompson Dr., Kerrville, TX 78028 or charity of choice.

The family would like to thank the staff at Hilltop Village and Jesse from Peterson Hospice.
