Dalton Lofton
12/5/1944 - 4/9/2022

On April 9, 2022, Dalton Phelps “D.P.” Lofton, aged 77, passed away due to injuries sustained from an aircraft accident. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, JoAnn Mendolia Lofton; his two daughters, Amie White of Kerrville, TX (Seth); DeAnna Jones of Natchitoches, LA (Ron); and his son, Travis Lofton of Shreveport, LA (Emily). Dalton was PawPaw to Mark Anthony Shirley, Amber Shirley-Smith, Kelsi Lofton, Hudson White, Emerson White, Griffin White and Camille Lofton. He was a great PawPaw to Leland Shirley, Mallory Shirley and Memphis Shirley. He is also survived by his oldest brother, James Lofton of Alexandria, LA (Beth). He was preceded in death by his identical twin brother, Alton; his twin brothers, Layne and Wayne Lofton; and his parents, Avery and Fannie Lofton.

Dalton’s passion for everything aviation began as a young boy. He achieved his dream when he soloed in his early 20s and eventually reached his goal as corporate pilot in the late 1970s. In their personal Cessna, he, JoAnn and their family flew the skies for 28 years. His employers included Tenneco, Simuflight, Gulfstream, Philip Morris, H.E.B. Grocery, Lewis Energy, Watermark; and in retirement, was parttime simulator instructor at Flight Safety International. Although he traveled the world and visited exotic places, he was always thankful when his wheels touched down on American soil. His favorite expression was, “Every trip is a vacation—every meal, a feast.” His expertise was aviation management with an emphasis in safety, training and standards.

As Dalton crawled into his aircraft on the morning of April 9, and prepared for his trip back to Kerrville, he "slipped the surly bonds of earth" to "touch the face of God," and now flies among the heavenly skies. His spirit will live within all who knew and loved him.

Memorial services will take place on Friday, May 6, 2022 at 2:00 PM, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 320 St. Peter Street, Kerrville, TX. A reception is planned in Tucker Hall adjacent to the church immediately after the service.
In lieu of flowers, a donation, in Dalton’s name, to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
