Thelma Gandy Wade

Thelma Wade passed away at the age of 94, having spent her life wholly devoted to her family.

The daughter of Jim Dollar Gandy and Zeta Alpha Nelson, Thelma grew up in Milano, Texas. She attended Southwest Texas State University, and married Dr. Austin Randall Moody. They had three children. They moved to Mason, Texas in 1961.

Later, as a single mother, Thelma moved with her children to Austin, Texas in 1963. She enrolled them in St. Paul Lutheran School and raised them in the Church.

Thelma met the love of her life, John Spencer “Jack” Wade, a bachelor attorney in Austin. They married in 1969 and moved to Westlake Hills. Nine months after the wedding, Jack passed away. Thelma was heartbroken but held it together for her kids. She took them snow skiing. They spent summers water skiing on Lake Austin and sailing on Lake Travis. They vacationed in Florida, New Mexico and Colorado.

Thelma ran the Capitol 10K, grew award winning roses, cooked beef stroganoff from scratch and collected fine art. She loved photography.

After 41 years, Thelma retired as a Data Analyst with the Veterans Administration. Granny Thel traveled often to visit her children and grandchildren in Colorado, Las Vegas, Kerrville and Mason, Texas. She pitched in with cooking and housework. She shared her wisdom, love and humor. She poured herself into her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack; her mother and father; two brothers, Dr. James Gandy of Brownwood and Jesse Gandy of Ledbetter; two sisters, Ella Fae Mayfield of San Antonio and Maxine Fail of Hanover, Texas.

Thelma is survived by her beloved sister, Minnie Schmidt of Mason, Texas; two sons, Dr. Austin Randall Moody II of Kerrville, and his wife Sharon, and Barry Moody, and his wife April of Austin; and daughter, Cindy Jones, and husband Quinn of Mason. Thelma is also survived by ten grandchildren, Dr. Nicole Moody of Boston, Massachusetts and her husband Dr. Dan Banks, Danielle McColloster and her husband, Dr. Max McColloster, Miranda Rippy of Fredericksburg, Texas, Savannah Rippy Huebsch and her husband Steve Huebsch of Pitkin County, Colorado, Nick Rippy and his wife Jaleen of Spicewood, Texas, Beau Rippy of San Marcos, Paris Jones of Killeen and Briggs Jones of Mason, and Emeigh Carper and Sarah Hallmark of Austin. She also has nine great-grandchildren, and 11 surviving nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 10:00 am, Thursday, December 28, 2023, at Grimes Funeral Chapels, officiated by Rev. Frankie Enloe. Burial will follow at Glen Rest Cemetery in Kerrville where Thelma will be buried beside her beloved husband, Jack.

Pallbearers will be Nick Rippy, Beau Rippy, Briggs Jones, Dr. Max McColloster, Jimmy Mayfield and James Kelly Schmidt. Honorary pallbearers are Steve Schmidt, Steve Huebsch, Dr. Dan Banks, Bob Gandy, Wes Gandy, Jim Gandy, Frank Mayfield and Jimmy Gandy.
