Janice Poppe
1/17/1948 - 1/27/2024

W. Janice Poppe (Jan) passed on from this life on January 27, 2024, leaving behind her husband of 37 years, Walter Poppe, her brother, Stanford H. Dommert (Stan), her sons, Donald J. Shingler III (Trey) and Danny Green, her 7 grandchildren, as well as many cousins, extended family members, and close family friends.

Born to Howard F. Dommert and Wynona A. Dommert at Fort Bliss Hospital in El Paso on January 17, 1948, Jan was born into a military family and grew up traveling, living in various states around the continental USA, such as California, Louisiana, Colorado, and Virginia, as well as in both Japan and Germany. Shortly before Jan turned 14, her father retired from the military at the end of 1961 and the family moved to Inverness, Florida, where she graduated from Citrus High School in 1966.

Jan was always glad she lived in so many places as a child. Her parents enjoyed taking extended vacations wherever they were and as a result, Jan experienced many diverse sites and events throughout Europe, such as the 1958 World’s Fair in Brussels, the Eiffel Tower, the Vatican, several Disneyland-like castles in the countries they visited, even a Concentration Camp on the German/Czechoslovak border. To gain such firsthand familiarity with these multiple nations, cultures, and people gave her an appreciation for the broadness of the world and its peoples that not many people enjoy. These experiences helped her develop the kind and caring attitude for others she carried with her throughout her life.

But Jan also genuinely loved settling down to live in Inverness. Not having to attend new schools every year or so allowed her to finally get to know people more deeply and meaningfully, and she made many life-long friends in Florida. Likewise, moving to Kerrville, Texas in 1984, where both parents had long bloodlines, felt like coming home to her, and she very soon found many more close friends to love.

Having been married twice before, Jan was cautious of marrying again; meeting Walt changed her mind and they each soon recognized that they had found their soul-mate, and quickly became inseparable, marrying in 1999.

One of Jan’s gifts was her amazing ability to remember names and significant dates in the lives of both family and friends; it was a gift that many in the family depended upon and already miss.

Jan was truly a wonderful wife and mother, sister, and friend; she will be long remembered among all who knew her, as well as deeply missed in the hearts of us who were closest to her.

Memorial services will be held at 2 PM, Saturday, February 24, 2024, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.
