David Gerald Carper, 55 years of age, passed from this life at his home in Farmington, NM on May 8, 2024.

He was born in Honolulu, HI, in January of 1969 to Catherine and Terrence Magid. From a young he spent summers in Hawaii with his father. He was an inquisitive and active youth and enjoyed playing soccer. He spent much of his young adult life in California. David attended Cal State Northridge receiving degrees in Creative Writing and Journalism. He went to work for Captions, Inc., closed captioning for television and movies, later expanding to his own closed captioning business. During this time, he had two sons of whom he was very proud. He also found that he was not only good with words, but with people. He was a well-loved special education teacher for elementary students.

In 2011, David moved to Kerrville to assist his family by taking care of his father and grandfather and reuniting with his younger son there. At this time, he was successful as a front desk manager at a hotel, meeting and greeting travelers. He began volunteering at the Kerrville State Hospital (KSH) where he was later offered a permanent position. He found his calling as a peer support specialist at the hospital. He excelled in engaging with and helping people, especially those with IDD and mental illness. At KSH, he met and fell in love with his wife, Beth, who was also employed there.

Nearly 40 years after Beth’s baptism at Trinity Baptist Church, David professed his faith in Jesus Christ and was baptized on February 2, 2020, at Trinity Baptist Church.

David was preceded in death by his father, Terrence Magid; his stepfather, William Carper; his grandfather, Glenn Thatcher; and his grandmother, Ruth Thatcher.

David is survived by his loving wife, Beth Carper; his sons, Jensen Carper and Zachary Jones; his mother, Catherine Carper; his sister, Jennifer Cantero; and his aunt, Deborah Magid, as well as his niece and nephews: Marlena, Alex, David and John.

David was a kind, Christian man, and a loving husband and father. He had a large heart dedicated to serving and helping others. He made friends wherever he went – he never knew a stranger. He will be greatly missed by many.
