Robert Van Dorn Young

Robert Young was born on June 15, 1937, into a loving family in Plainfield, New Jersey, where he was welcomed by his parents, Herbert and Eleanor Young. An ambitious student, he pursued higher education at Williams College in Massachusetts, a place that would hold a special significance in his life. It was here that he also met his future wife, Phyllis Young, while both were navigating their early careers at MassMutual in Springfield, Massachusetts. They wed in 1962, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey together.

Immediately after their marriage, Robert and Phyllis relocated to the vibrant city of Seattle. For 38 years, they made this picturesque city their home, nurturing their family and building cherished memories. It was in Seattle that they welcomed their sons, Bill and Steve, who brought immense joy and energy into their lives.

An enthusiastic tennis player, Robert showcased his passion for the sport throughout his life. Until just a month before his passing, he could often be found on the court, embodying the spirit of competition and camaraderie. His dedication extended beyond personal enjoyment; he emerged as a leader in the Pacific Northwest Tennis Association, where he played an instrumental role in mentoring young athletes, helping them to achieve their dreams and unlock their potential.

Robert was deeply committed to his faith and community, serving in various capacities within local churches, including the Kerrville Bible Church, where he served on the Mission board. His generosity to others was showcased in the important work of distributing Bibles with the Gideons, helping spread hope and inspiration.

After retiring, Robert continued to share his love for tennis by coaching high school and college teams in both North Carolina and Texas, leaving a lasting impact on the students he guided. His unwavering connection to Williams College remained strong, as he actively engaged with fellow alumni and played a key role in fundraising efforts for the institution.

Robert is survived by his devoted wife, Phyllis, and their two sons, Bill and Steve, as well as his treasured grandsons, Carter and Jackson, who brought light and laughter into his life. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Herbert and Eleanor, who laid the foundation for the values he cherished.

A memorial service to celebrate Robert’s rich life and the love he shared will be held at Kerrville Bible Church on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at 11:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Kerrville Bible Church Mission program in his memory, a fitting tribute to a man whose life was dedicated to serving his community and uplifting those around him. He will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him, his legacy of kindness and enthusiasm echoing in the hearts of many.
