Larry Charles Freeman
1/24/1940 - 7/3/2025
Larry Charles Freeman went to be with the Lord on July 3, 2025, in Boerne, Texas, after a dementia diagnosis and a year-long struggle with the effects of a severe stroke which left him incapacitated. He was 85.
Larry was born on January 24, 1940, and was the youngest son of the longtime United Methodist pastor the Rev. Dr. Alfred Hendrix Freeman and Carolyn McNeely Freeman. Larry and his beloved wife of 61 years, Rebecca (Becky) Simmons Freeman, were residents of Houston, Wichita Falls, Kerrville and most recently lived in Boerne at Franklin Park Assisted Living. They spent their lives invested in their church and serving in their community.
As a preacher’s kid, Larry lived in different cities as his dad was appointed senior pastor in various Methodist churches. He was born in Oklahoma City, moved to El Dorado, Arkansas, and then to Texas where he lived in Corpus Christi, Wichita Falls and graduated from Lamar High School in Houston. He attended Southern Methodist University and graduated from McMurry College in Abilene with a degree in business administration in 1964 and soon after, married the love of his life, Becky.
After working in Houston several years, Larry moved his young family back to Wichita Falls in 1970 where he spent 21 years as a stockbroker and insurance agent. He and Becky were active members of First United Methodist Church where he served on a variety of committees and was a longtime usher. He was on the board at Wichita Falls Country Club where he enjoyed playing golf and tennis.
He and Becky moved to Kerrville in 1991 where they lived until 2024. He turned his love for tennis into setting up the first pickleball league at Tierra Linda courts in Kerrville and helped get pickleball started at FUMC in Kerrville. He loved teaching and encouraging others to play pickleball as well.
He was an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America and was active in civic affairs as a member of the Rotary Club and a Kerrville Chamber of Commerce Ambassador. He was a member of FUMC Kerrville where he started and helped lead the early morning men’s Bible study for close to 30 years and was involved in the Emmaus community for many years. Most recently, he attended St. Paul United Methodist Church until he experienced a debilitating stroke in 2024.
Larry was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He collected knives, guns and became interested in pre-1850 mountain man black powder rifles and attended many weekend rendezvous camping and trading goods that might have been used during that time. He loved to trade used cars and was the life of the party at any gathering with friends and family.
Larry loved Jesus, his family and people. Many times, he befriended and helped a homeless or wayward man with a meal, a few dollars for his pocket or a warm coat. He attended almost all his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events and would talk about the pride he had in his family with anyone who would listen.
Larry was greeted at the gates of heaven by his parents and brothers Richard Marion Freeman and John Alfred Freeman as well as many dear friends and family who have gone before him to be with Jesus. He is survived by his wife Becky, originally from Rochester, Texas; his children Libby Freeman Lunsford and her husband Charlie of Boerne, and their daughters Claire and husband Jake Hagen of Bedford, Mary Kate and husband Ben Carl of Boerne and Caroline and husband Cinco Winston of Waco; son the Rev. Dr. Rusty Freeman and his wife Dr. Lane Freeman of Marble Falls, and their son Brian and wife Chase Freeman of Marble Falls and daughter Bailey Freeman of Dallas, as well as nine great grandchildren—Annie, Libby and Mary Wells Hagen, George and Bobby Carl, Ford and Elle Winston, and Oliver and Adeline Freeman. His sisters-in-law Lois Marie Freeman of San Antonio and Sherry Freeman of Fredericksburg, as well as numerous nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
A memorial service to honor Larry’s life will be at 10am on Saturday, July 12 at the historic chapel at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Boerne. His remains will be buried in a family plot at Bethesda Cemetery near Weatherford, Texas, at a later date.
Donations may be made to the “Freeman Family Endowed Scholarship” at Baylor University’s George W. Truett Seminary Wesley House or to the Revive Movement (revivetexas.org) to send kids to church camp.
