Lewis Carr Hurt III

Maj Lewis Carr Hurt, III, USMC Retired, 79 of Mountain Home, TX passed away October 2nd in San Antonio, TX. He was born in San Antonio to Lewis Carr Hurt Jr. and Marie P. Hurt on March 20th, 1946. He married Lori Rochelle Lyles on June 6th, 1992, in Lawton, OK.
Lew went to school at Tivy High School in Kerrville, TX and graduated with his bachelor’s from Baylor University. He commissioned as a Marine Corps Officer shortly after and proudly served in the Vietnam War as an F-4 Phantom pilot. His Marine Corps awards include the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Star Device, the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Medal with Palm, the Republic of Vietnam Civil Action Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 1480, a member of the Esa Rosa Descendants, an Associate Member of the Comanche Indian Veterans Association, and a member of the Comanche Native American Church. Lew was skilled in the art of traditional Comanche bow and arrow making as taught by his mentor, the late Carney Saupitty Sr. He spent many years immersed in Comanche language and culture and had many friends and relatives in the Comanche Nation of Oklahoma.
Lew was preceded in death by his father and mother, his grandparents Henry and Winona Priour, and daughter Raynelle Kerchee. He is survived by his wife, Lori, his children CPT Brad Hurt, Roxie Yazzie, Thomas Hurt, SSG Tennyson Kerchee, and Ashley Kerchee, his brother Robbie Hurt and was blessed with eleven grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm on Monday, October 6th, 2025, at Grimes Funeral Chapels. Funeral services will be held at 10am, Tuesday, October 7th, 2025, at Grimes Funeral Chapels in Kerrville, TX, presided by William Saupitty Sr. of Boone, OK. Graveside Services and burial will be at Otipoby Comanche Cemetery, Ft. Sill, OK, Friday, October 10th, 2025.
