Betsy Whitaker (Betsy Larkin Carrigg), 72, of Kerrville, Texas and Westcliffe, Colorado, passed away on April 25, 2022 in Kerrville surrounded by her family. She was born in New Hanover County, North Carolina and adopted by her adoring parents, Hugh and Bettie Carrigg. Her middle name, Larkin, was in honor of the family that united her with her parents.

Betsy graduated from Needham Broughton High School in Raleigh, NC and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She married W. Ed Whitaker on June 12, 1971 in Raleigh, North Carolina, and they lived in multiple remote national parks around the country, raising their two children.

With her love of books, Betsy worked as a librarian, and later a bookstore manager for Eastern National. After retiring to the Hill Country, she and her husband split their time between Kerrville and the mountains of Colorado. She was an avid walker, hiker, and Carolina Tarheels basketball fan. She enjoyed spoiling those she loved, spending time with friends, and playing word games. She was the glue in her family and a constant source of strength, support, and good humor.

Survivors include Betsy's high school sweetheart and spouse of 50 years, Ed Whitaker; son, Bill Whitaker, and his spouse, Lola Sanchez; daughter, Kristi Whitaker, and her spouse, Ken Twist; and grandchildren, Kannon and Kalena Whitaker. Her youngest, non-biological child, was her black lab, Bookie.

A party in honor of Betsy, aka Betsy-palooza, will be hosted by family with details to be determined.

The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the ''walking posse'', Peterson Regional Medical Center's Palliative and Hospice Care, and Always Best Care for their help during her battle with ALS.

Betsy showed amazing courage, grace, and fortitude in the face of a terrible disease, and she will be missed deeply by those whose lives she touched. As Anne of Green Gables said, ''True friends are always together in spirit.''
