After pilot training, he was assigned as a T-29 pilot at Harlingen, AFB, Texas. He then became an instructor pilot with Air Force Instrument Pilot Instructor School (IPIS) at James Connally AFB, Texas. In 1963, while at James Connally AFB, he earned his Master's degree from Baylor University through the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) and then was assigned as an Assistant Professor of English at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado, from 1963-1967. During 1967-1968, he was a C-130 aircraft commander flying tactical airlift missions in Vietnam. Other assignments include: Headquarters USAF, the Pentagon; Air Reserve Personnel Center (ARPC), Denver, Colorado; the USAF Air War College, Maxwell AFB, Alabama; Commander, 3370th Technical Training Group, Chanute AFB, Illinois; Supreme Headquarters, Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), Belgium; Commander, 3350th Technical Training group, Sheppard AFB, Texas; and Vice-Commander, 3700th Technical Training Wing, Sheppard AFB, Texas. Colonel Feather retired from the Air Force on 1 March 1984.

His decorations included the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf cluster, and Navy Presidential Unit Citation for his airlift support for the Marines during the battle for Khe Sahn during the Vietnam war.
Following retirement, George and Allete moved to Aurora, Colorado, where he became a Colorado Real Estate Agent and owner and President of Mountaintop Tours, a Colorado ski industry tour company.
Throughout his entire life, George was an active member of a local Baptist church wherever he was living at the time. He was an ordained Baptist deacon and led Adult Bible Study classes for over 50 years. In 1984-1986, he served as a Mission Service Corps Volunteer with the Radio and Television Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention as a consultant for the newly formed ACTS (America Christian Television System) Network in Colorado. From October 1992-September 1993, George and Allete served as volunteer missionaries through the Southern Baptist International Service Corps in Tokyo, Japan, teaching English and Bible Studies at a Tokyo Baptist Student Center.
In 1997, George and Allete moved from Aurora, Colorado, to Breckenridge, Colorado, where he continued selling real estate and operating Mountaintop Tours. While in Breckenridge, he served on the Summit County School Board, was president of the Lake Dillon Optimist Club, and was a volunteer teaching ESL (English Second Language) at Summit High School.
In 2000, George was elected to serve on the Executive board of the Colorado Baptist Convention. In 2001, he was elected Chairman of the Executive Board and served in that position for two years.

Later, he was elected to a three year term on the Chapel Board of Trustees and served as Chairman of the Board his final year.
George and Allete moved to Boerne, Texas in 2017 to be even closer to family and to provide assisted care for Allete. In March 2023, George made the move to Kerrville, Texas so he could more easily be a part of everyday life with family.

I had the wonderful honor of being a caregiver to George and his wife Allette. I was with them for several years. George was a wonderful man and a great friend. He involved me and my 2 children with family activities was like being apart of the family. George kept up with me through the years making sure I was OK and what was new in my life. Our past time was reading the Bible and talking about the Lord. He will be greatly missed but I'll see you in heaven
