Ursula Isabel Spitta Cox went to be eternally with our Lord and Savior on Friday, July 26, 2024. She was born November 19, 1924 in Barcelona, Spain, to Adolph Arthur and Sophie Elizabeth Spitta. Her father had an import business there. At the age of nine, she traveled with her sister, Carmen, to Gummersbach, Germany, accompanied by her Aunt Gertrude, in order to live there and learn German. She eventually spoke German, Spanish, English, and French. When she was 14, her family traveled to the Dominican Republic, to join her father, who was employed by a Canadian sugar plantation. She completed all her secondary schooling in the Dominican Republic, and worked in a medical clinic.

She immigrated to the United States, through Philadelphia, PA, after World War II, to study Medical Technology. There, she fell in love and married her husband, Burke L. Cox (Burkie) in 1949. She accomplished her goal of becoming a Registered Medical Technologist, and during her entire career, practiced her profession without the use of computers. She manually made her slides, her cultures, and solutions to perform the Lab procedures on her patients.

Ursula and Burkie settled in San Antonio in 1950, joining her parents who were living there. They raised two children and were active in their church and community. Ursula became a Naturalized US Citizen and was very proud to be an American. She continued working as a Medical Technologist for many years. Following retirement, they traveled to Germany to visit the treasured scenes of her childhood. They moved to Port Aransas, where Burkie enjoyed spending time fishing, and Ursula participated in Community Fund Raisers by making hand-made crafts.

In 1999 they moved to Ingram, where Ursula enjoyed many wonderful years until she moved to Assisted Living in Boerne. She loved to tell many interesting stories about her experiences of her childhood years and about her family.

Ursula is preceded in death by her husband Burke L. Cox, her parents, two brothers and a sister.

She is survived by two children: Thomas (Tom) Cox and wife Shelley of Ingram, and Elizabeth (Lisa) Neal and husband Jim, of Comfort; five grandchildren, and many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be Thursday, August 1, 5 - 7:00 pm at Grimes Funeral Chapels in Kerrville.

Interment will be Friday, August 2 at 11:00, at Sunset Memorial Park, 1701 Austin Hwy, San Antonio, TX 78218

A service celebrating her life will be held Saturday, August 3 at 11:00, at Morningside at Menger Springs, 1100 Grand Blvd., Boerne, TX 78006. Location will be in the Grand Room of Menger House with Pastor Duane Manning officiating.

Memorials may be given to Samaritan's Purse or St. Jude's Children's Hospital. The family wishes to extend sincere thanks to the caring staff of Cibolo House-Morningside at Menger Springs, Kristin Steinke RN, NP, and Alamo Hospice.

To the family of Ursula Cox,

My name is Kevin Solbrig, and I own Solbrig Hearing Center in Kerrville, Texas. Ursula was a longtime patient of mine. I have many fond memories of our visits abroad, a variety of many discussions.

I always enjoyed visiting with her about her years, growing up in Europe and then moving to the Dominican Republic. When her grandson was stationed in Iraq, she was very concerned for his safety, and we prayed together that the Lord would look out after him and protect him from harm.

She was definitely a very neat lady. In later years, her daughter would bring her in to my office and I got to know Elizabeth a little bit also.

She will be fondly remembered by many, including myself. She will also be sorely missed, especially by those who loved her most. She was my patient, but I also included her in my list of People I call my friend.

I pray that the Lord looks after those that Ursula left behind and comfort them during this typical time.

With many fond memories

My heartfelt condolences to all of you. Ursula was such a lovely neighbor to Vern and I. We enjoyed many lovely evenings on our front porch visiting and perhaps having her lovely frozen Vodka concoction. Fly hi sweet lady, I know you are with your Burkie now. Will carry your sweet memories always.
