If you are reading this, I am probably dead. I passed over the last water hazard on January 31, 2025.
My ancestors came to Texas in two covered ox carts in 1855 and settled on 1500 acres between two forks of the Martinez and Cibolo creeks in Bexar County. My great grandfather served as a Captain with the 4th Texas Infantry, Hood's Brigade, C.S.A. My grandfather, Gail Borden, was a superintendent with the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railroad. My maternal great grandfather, Hardaway Hunt Dinwiddie, was a VMI cadet (C.S.A.) who fought in the battle of New Market and later became the first Chairman (President) of Texas A&M College. His only son, my grandfather Captain (Doctor) Robert, WWI, is buried on the grounds of the VA Hospital in Kerrville. My Father, Gail Edward, was a Major in the Army and served in France during WWII. Upon his return, I began my life as an ''Army Brat'' - and I was.
I matriculated from the Universities of Houston and Oklahoma and embarked on an exciting career in the Army. I had the privilege to serve two very personally rewarding tours in Vietnam; one with the 25th Infantry Division, and one as an advisor with the elite Vietnamese Airborne Division. I retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1986. I retired again, after working for the Navy and the Small Business Administration which eventually brought me back to my beloved Texas.
Life gave me two wonderful wives: Sara (Atkins) (deceased) and Carolyn (Stringer). Both wives deserved much better than having to put up with the likes of me. I am very proud to have four wonderful talented, and loving daughters: Elizabeth Docia, Katherine Alicia, Dawn Marie, Carol Ann, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. My one regret is not telling them that I love them more often, but I surely did. My three sisters, Frances (Bill) Woodfin, Betsy (Charles) Doty and Marcia Lillie (deceased) were an important part of my life as well. I was fortunate to have the most loving Mother a boy could have and her memories have lasted a lifetime.
Send me to the family plot in San Jose Burial Park in San Antonio for my final resting place where there will be a private family interment, but make sure I am dead first. Celebrate my life with drinks and good food, wherever you are, for I will be with you in spirit.
The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m., Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at Grimes Funeral Chapels.
A private inurnment with full military honors will take place in San Antonio at a later date.

I am heartbroken for you dear friend. The two of you fought the valiant fight through this disease. I know he will always be with you.
My mother thought his eyebrows were so very special, as was he.
I am with you.
