Jean grew up on the Texas Gulf Coast in the constant company of her large, loving, extended family. She graduated from Bay City High School in 1958 and attended Wharton County Junior College, where she earned her LVN certificate. Wharton is also where she met her husband Prentice Gerald Witt. They married on April 8, 1960 in Enid, Oklahoma as Gerald completed Air Force pilot training. The young couple moved to Gerald's base on Michigan's Upper Peninsula, where both of their children, Brent David Witt and Marla Witt McCarty, were born and the Texas family discovered firsthand the challenges of living way up north. Upon fulfilling his commitment to the Air Force, Gerald accepted a job with Delta Airlines, moved his family back to Texas and the couple began traveling the world. They settled on the family farm, the Witt Home Place in Camp Verde. Jeannie died one month shy of their Blue Sapphire (65th) anniversary while she was on the road with her husband, returning from their annual trip to see their son and his family in Florida.
A skilled Impressionistic painter, with an eye for beauty and the talent to interpret what she imagined, Jean trained at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and studied painting at retreats in the Texas Hill Country and New Mexico. Her artwork graces the walls of her beloved family, and hangs in collections in far-flung places. In her creations, she leaves a tangible expression of her joy, and heart, for all who miss her terribly. We will treasure her gift forever.
Jean loved her family fiercely and her friends dearly. She is survived by her husband, her son David Witt and wife Jeanna, grandsons and great-grandchildren, Jake, wife Megan and children Babe and Ace, and Josh, wife Sophie and children Jack and an already adored baby due on Jean's birthday, her daughter Marla and husband Brian McCarty, grandchildren, Kyle, Katie and Claire. Jean is preceded in death by her parents, her siblings Jo Ann Highfield, Sue Holloway and John Holloway and many wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A family visitation is scheduled 5:00 to 7:00 pm, Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at Grimes Funeral Chapels in Kerrville.
Her funeral will be held 10:00 am, Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at the Center Point Methodist Church, followed by a graveside service at the Center Point Cemetery where she will be laid to rest.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the charity of your choice or to the Center Point Methodist Church's Stained Glass Fund, PO Box 530, Center Point TX 78010.
