He graduated Comstock High School in 1964, then continued his education at Sul Ross State College, where he earned his B.S. in Industrial Technology in 1968. Bob worked as an Industrial Arts teacher for 10 years and then in 1978, he earned his Master of Education degree at Stephen F. Austin State University. His most notable years were spent serving as a school administrator. He deeply cherished the students and colleagues from Huffman Middle School, Miles High School, and Reagan County High School. He was involved in these communities through his service and dedication to the Huffman Lions Club, Miles Lion Club (President), Reagan County Lions Club (President), and Leakey Lions Club. Bob received numerous recognitions over the years - Honorary Chapter Farmer (Huffman FFA), Citizen of the Year (Miles Lion Club), and Outstanding Principal (TX Association of Secondary School Principals), just to name a few.
After his retirement in 2002, Bob and Joan moved to the family ranch in Real County where he proudly served as owner/manager of the McCarson Brothers' Ranch.
Apart from his academic and professional accomplishments, Bob was known as the cowboy hat wearing, bonfire building, Rhodesian Ridgeback raising, beer drinking, hilarious story-telling rancher, and friend to so many. He was a true animal lover and had many Ridgebacks, all named from the classic 'Lonesome Dove'. His love of animals and tending to the livestock on the ranch made his retirement that much more sweet.
Bob was preceded in death by his brothers Bill McCarson and Warren McCarson, parents Nadine and Edmund McCarson.
Survivors include wife Joan McCarson; daughter Rebecca Gould; son Matthew McCarson; stepson Cody Goetz and wife Carlee; stepdaughter Amber Goetz; brother Ray McCarson; grandchildren June McCarson, Dietz Goetz and Gretchen Goetz; nephews Mac McCarson, Michael and wife Lynn, and Andy and wife Denise, nieces Kaylynn and Nell, and many more loved ones and close friends.
A private Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date.
The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to all the doctors, nurses, and caretakers over the last few years - especially those at Sid Peterson Memorial Hospital, Davita Kidney Center, and River Hills Heath and Rehabilitation, all of Kerrville, TX.

Bob McCarson followed me as the high school principal for Miles ISD. We became close friends through that relationship. He had a wit about him like no other and he would do anything for you. Amanda and I had some great times with Joan and him. Bob McCarson will be missed.

Ricky and I have many fond memories of Bob. He was Ricky’s principal at Miles. When we had our baby boy we lived next to him in a duplex. When we apologized for a crying baby at night he would smile and say,”I’m just glad I didn’t have to get up and take care of a new baby.” Ricky enjoying working with him so much and has great memories. We had the best time when I voted to the ranch for a weekend! God bless you all in this sad time.

My favorite memory of Mr. McCarson was when he stepped into Coach Russell’s first-period class to ask him to cover his second-period class. “I have to go to the ER. I got an eraser stuck in my ear.” Everyone was silent until Mr. McCarson left and closed the door. Then, we cracked up! Mr. McCarson had been twirling a pencil in his ear, and the eraser came off, lodging it in his ear canal. Miles High School Class of 1984 will never forget that!

To many good memories to tell. Best one is skipped school and went to pecos river to fish and ran into him on a school day up the river. Only thing that was discussed was if the fish were biting. lol. And after that we had lots of fishing stories to talk about. Because I was in the office every morning to dive the announcements to the whole school only to see if I had gotten in trouble the day before. I learned quickly to not get in trouble because he had no problem lining me up.
RIP Sir you taught me a lot about life.

During his years at RC, we had a great time. He would show up at a marching band rehearsal just to enjoy the band. He was a tremendous friend and supporter.
