On behalf of all of us at the Point Theatre, we want to share how deeply we valued Dan's presence and spirit. He brought warmth, kindness, and a true love of the arts to every moment we shared. It was a joy to work alongside him, and his absence will be deeply felt. We are grateful for the memories and the time we had together.

To Joan and the rest of the family—please know that our hearts are with you. Dan touched so many lives here, and we’re holding you in our thoughts with love and sympathy.

Dan and I became acquainted at the audition of 1883. We were all standing around like scared little birds, and then Dan spoke to me. He wished me the best of luck and gave all smiles. I was baffled how he could be so incredibly supportive of this stranger he had just met. But that was Dan; he never met a stranger. A month later, when we both got called back, we realized we were town neighbors. Dan oftentimes called me his "little sister," which always made my heart swell because who wouldn't want a big brother like him! I do believe God puts people in your path for a reason. I am incredibly humbled and honored to have met Dan. He was an incredible man with a heart of gold. May you rest in peace, my dear friend.

Dear Joan,

I know you are hurting, and it breaks my heart. You are someone who has given so much of yourself to help and care for others, and it’s unbearably unfair that such a tragic loss has touched your life.

There are no words that can truly ease this kind of pain, but I want you to know that you are not alone. My heart is with you—offering quiet support, steady love, and deep compassion as you move through this incredibly difficult time.

Please don’t hesitate to lean on me. Whether you need silence, tears, or someone to simply sit with you, I’m here.

With deepest love and sympathy,
Carrie

To all the Cortez family

Dan always had a ready smile and kind word.
Cody was an amazing kid to see grow in to a good man.
The time we met Courtney with Cody she reminded us of rest of the family kind, loving, respectful.
May God bring you all comfort and support during theses trying times.
We also wish Joan a full and blessed recovery

The loss the Cortez family has suffered is truly unimaginable. No one shoukd have to lose loved ones like that and certainly not 3 at once., Joan and I have been good friends for years. I know how much she loved Dan and the rest of the Cortez family. Dan’s sons were her sons! Joanie, Dan never wanted to leave you, particularly like that, but I know that he is looking down on you and John and the rest of the family, giving you strength to make it through all that’s ahead. And he would gladly give his life again to know that you were spared. He loved you and John with all his heart. And I love you, Joan. And we’ll all help you get through this.

Say it’s not so. We built lasting friendships with Dan and Joan when we lived in Kerrville. We are thankful that we shared our hearts with one another for years in our church life group. Dan was real…a real gentleman, a real provider, a real man of God and a really talented man - could make anything with wood. I won’t forget how he welcomed us in his home and heart. Rest in peace and forever in the arms of the Almighty. We know with certainty that you are having your best day yet, but it doesn’t make it easier to lose you. .

Dan, though we only knew each other for a few years, you left a lasting impact on me. Your warmth, kindness, and light made every moment on set unforgettable. You always made me feel welcomed and appreciated. Walker and our True Crime shows won’t be the same without you. Sending love, peace, and strength to everyone who’s feeling this loss.

Was concerned about Joan marrying Dan until I met him. I know why she said "yes". He was very talented, personable, and very very special. I loved the trail ride across the road for hours, the tours around Kerrville and the hospitality he showed, even if he did tease about his "in-law" on his radio show. He did right by his children, kept his word and it was obvious was also raised right. As he rests now with the Lord, may the family find comfort in precious memories.
