Dixie G. Buchanan
12/4/1931 - 12/10/2023

Dixie Gay Buchanan departed this world on December 10th, 2023, just after her 92nd birthday. She was living in Cedar Park, Texas at the time.

Dixie, an only child, was born to Marcella Crowley Buce and James Sherman Buce in Osawatomie, Kansas, on December 4, 1931, and as the bumper stickers say and so did she: “I wasn’t born in Texas but I got here as soon as I could.” Her family moved to Texas when she was two and from that time on, she considered herself a Texan.

Her love was music and she started piano lessons when she was eight. She studied voice, piano and organ most of her life and sang in church choirs, directed church choirs, played organ and piano for churches; belonged to the Philharmonic Music Club and directed their chorus in Corpus Christi; sang in the Corpus Christ Chorale; and as a volunteer, directed the 4th grade chorus in the local elementary school when her youngest son was in the 4th and 5th grade. Dixie also gave piano lessons from her home for a number of years. She was a cradle Methodist and while living in Kerrville had been a member of the First United Methodist Church where she sang in the Saints Alive chorus. She also sang with that group at Carnegie Hall in New York, which was her lifelong dream.

She is survived by her son, Keith Cameron Thrailkill, his daughter Amber Thrailkill and husband Jason, along with their three daughters, McKenzie Mae, Meadow Marie, and MaeLee Maxzanne; one grandson from her son Paul, Kele Thrailkill and granddaughter, Lena from her son Marshall. She is also survived by her stepchildren, whom she loved as her own, Diane Hoblick, grandsons Jason Hoblick and his sons Matthew and Colin, and Joshua Hoblick, his wife Ayako and daughter Melody. Paul Buchanan, wife Dana and son Drew.

Family members who previously passed include her beloved husband of 36 years, Bob Buchanan; sons, Marshall and Paul Thrailkill; Marshall’s wife, Norma; grandson, Cameron Thrailkill (father Keith); and stepdaughter, Lisa Buchanan.

Dixie worked for Del Mar College in Corpus Christi for 13 years as secretary to the Dean of Fine Arts. After moving to California to marry Bob in 1980, she worked for Unocal (Union Oil Company of California) for eight years, most of those years as secretary to a vice president.

Memorial services will be held at 2 PM, Friday, January 12, 2024, at Kerrville First United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. David Payne.
