Elby J. Hutto
8/12/1934 - 8/22/2024
Elby J. Hutto, born in Del Rio, Texas, on August 12, 1934, to J.B. Hutto and Lily Carter Hutto, passed on to be with Jesus on Thursday, August 22, 2024, at Amistad Nursing Home, surrounded by his loving family.
Elby graduated from Camp Wood High School in 1952 and earned a degree in Animal Science from Sul Ross State University in 1956. He began his career as a livestock inspector and taught school in Big Springs and later in Utopia, Texas, where he settled and raised his family. After some time teaching, Elby realized his true calling was ranching. He spent over 60 years raising Angora goats, sheep, and cows on his properties and numerous leases across Uvalde, Bandera, Real, and Medina Counties. He was still working cattle and attending the auction until he had a stroke in 2022.
Elby was preceded in death by his parents, J.B. Hutto and Lily Carter Hutto, and his brother, Emmette Hutto. He was survived by his brothers Aubrey (Chubby) Hutto and wife Priscilla and J.B. (Bubby) Hutto Jr. And wife Annette.
Elby married Helen Davis on June 1, 1962, and they shared a lifetime of love and companionship. Helen survives him, along with their children, Gerald Jay Hutto and his wife Holly, Glyn Wade Hutto and his wife Robbin, and Janet Gail Hutto Davis and her husband Jason. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Aaron Hutto, Caleb Hutto, Miriam Trujillo, Michael Hutto, Anika Hutto, Davis Hutto, Mason Hutto, Morgan Romo, and Lindsey Davis, along with 12 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Elby was an active member of the Uvalde County 4H, the Utopia School Board, the Utopia Park Board, the Utopia Horse Club, and the Leakey Horse Club, and he served his community through various programs over the years.
Known for his friendly and outgoing personality, Elby never met a stranger. He was famous for introducing himself to everyone he encountered, often with the greeting, "I'm Elby Hutto, who are you?" at the livestock auction each week. He loved a good joke, often sharing ones he heard from friends like Dr. Watkins, Doyle Holman, Donnie Gardner, or Gary Crozier with his children and grandchildren. His grandchildren fondly remember when he would ask, "Do you know how to catch a polar bear?" His love for friends and family was evident, and anyone who spoke to him quickly learned that his family was the apple of his eye. His charming wit and quick thinking left a lasting impact on many, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Those who loved him look forward to reuniting with him in heaven, where he’ll no doubt have updates on the latest rodeos, stock shows and any good deals on a pen of cattle.
The family wishes to extend a special THANK YOU to Terri Ellis and the Uvalde Hospice for their loving care and support.
Pallbearers will be Aaron Hutto, Caleb Hutto, Michael Hutto, Davis Hutto, Mason Hutto, and Brett Hutto. Honorary Pallbearers are John Nelson, Doyle Holman, Gary Crozier, George Hydrick, Donnie Gardner, and Bill Schaeffer.
A Celebration of Life will be held August 31, 2024, at Living Waters Church in Utopia at 11 am, officiated by Robert Richarz, with a full BBQ dinner provided by the family to follow at Elby’s request.
Memorials may be made to Utopia ISD Scholarship Fund, PO Box 923, Utopia, TX 78884; Uvalde Hospice, 100 Royal Ln., Uvalde, TX 78801; or a charity of one’s choice.
