James Norman Houghton

James Norman Houghton, 77, of Kerrville, Texas, passed away on Nov. 12, 2024, with his wife Mary holding his hand.

Norman was born Feb. 24, 1947, in Morton, Texas, the son of Robert Gordon Houghton and Lola Mae (Harrison) Houghton.

He graduated from Morton High School in 1965, then went on to attend South Plains College in Levelland, Texas.

He married Mary Lou Davis on Nov. 29, 1965, in Morton, Texas. They were married 59 years and were partners in almost every adventure they took together, whether it was driving trucks, hauling junk, cooking meals, cleaning schools, raising livestock and gardens, remodeling their home, or delivering newspapers. Norman worked as an electrician, an insurance salesman and a newspaper carrier. He also worked for a number of years at The Water Jug where he had numerous customers he considered friends.

Norman loved fishing, watching or reading westerns, and spending time with his family. His greatest accomplishment was his family: daughter Margaret, a teacher at Smithson Valley High School; son Donne, Kerr County Road and Bridge Department assistant road administrator; daughter Becky, a sports performance massage therapist; son William, a social studies teacher at Comfort Middle School; and son Chris, underwriter with Torrent Technologies.

Remaining to cherish Norman’s memory are his wife, Mary Houghton; children and spouses: Margaret and Robert Edmonson, Donne and Jennifer Houghton, Becky Taccetta, William and Jennifer Houghton, and Chris and Kristin Houghton; grandchildren, Derrek Houghton, Maranda Koenig (husband Tyler), Jennifer Houghton, August Higgins, Gracie Taccetta, Ainsley Houghton, Trenton Taccetta, Brady Houghton, Stella Houghton, Greta Houghton; and one great-grandson, Lucas James Koenig.

The family plans a private memorial service at home on Friday morning with a memorial celebration to be held at a later date.
