Fritz Morquecho
4/27/1935 - 1/20/2025

Alfredo ‘Fritz’ Morquecho, 89, of Kerrville, passed away on January 20th, 2025, in Kerrville. Born in Gregory TX to Arturo and Adelina Morquecho on April 27, 1935. He married Mary Louisa (Ayala) Silva on April 16th, 1955, in Kerrville.

He attended Tivy High School and later went on to graduate from Abilene Barber School. Fritz worked as a barber for Abilene State School and later transferred to Kerrville State Hospital where he retired after 35 years of combined service. While being a barber was his main occupation, his passion was music! He started playing music at the age of 5 with the guitar being his first instrument. He later mastered the accordion. Fritz had several bands over the years from Los Tres Aces to the Fritz Morquecho Band. He was most proud to start a family band once his children were older, winning local music competitions and landed the family band on a local TV show in Kerrville. Fritz served his community with music, including the Texas State Arts and Crafts Fair, the Jimmy Rogers Music Festival, Kerrville Folk Music Festival, the Texas Heritage Music Foundation, Notre Dame Catholic Church, the Doyle Center, the Dietert Center and many, many more. He accompanied various artists, adding his flare of the accordion to their music.

After retiring from the Kerrville State Hospital and recognizing that music was shifting away from electric instruments, Fritz started playing mariachi music with his compadres and many of his long-time friends. Playing music for weddings, anniversaries, quinceaneras, funerals and everything in between. He often played music for a couple’s wedding day and later played for their 50th wedding anniversary. Fritz was also a family man who enjoyed spending time with his family, doing projects with his children and grandkids, traveling, dancing with his wife, and taking his accordion along just in case he had an opportunity to jam with the band.

Fritz acquired numerous accolades in his music career. His most prized recognition was being an inductee into the Tejano Roots Hall of Fame in 2016. In 2023, Texas Governor Greg Abbott recognized Fritz and all of his accomplishments by declaring July 27th as ‘Fritz Morquecho Day.’

Fritz was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Albert and Ernest; and wife of 65 years, Mary.

Survivors include Eddie Morquecho, Bobby (Becky) Morquecho, Brenda (Joe) Sanchez; 7 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4pm-6pm followed by a rosary at 6pm on Sunday, January 26th at Grimes Funeral Chapels, 728 Jefferson St. in Kerrville.
