"I’m so sad to hear of my friend and patient leaving us. I know one number Wasey was indeed ready to make the glorious trip. In our time together he certainly made a large imprint on my life in my heart.

He was one of my most favorite patients of all. That’s over the course of 45 years of practice in Kerrville. He was a very unique, articulate, super smart, compassionate and upbeat guy. I suspect his glass was forever Full, not wasting any Half of anything.

He taught me a great deal about life, and in his own soft persuasive yet humorous way ( dry as West Texas), so much so I’d not catch it sometimes, about exactly how his medical treatment plan was to go. I felt really important one time when he asked my opinion. There would be occasional times when I would bring up something new, or a potential change in our strategy, feeling quite smug about the brilliance of my plan, and he would just look at me and simply say: “Doctor, I’m Not going to do that”. No explanation, just fact. I would usually just say Yessir.

A common thread that we shared, which I did not realize for quite a number of years, was that we were both Orange Blood Texas Longhorns . I loved talking with him about Austin and UT during his time there. He also was very excited that my daughter had graduated as the 4th generation of O’Donnell Longhorns.

At some visits, he made it quite clear as I was coming in the exam room that there really wasn’t much to talk about because “this is what we’re going to do, and I just need a prescription”. He actually was there intending to discuss a few things related to the world and tell me how to fix it. I just said Yessir.

It’s comforting for me to know that he’s out of pain and having some fun again. The smile and smiling eyes will always be in my Heart. I hope he’s dancing with the Angels, because he brings the music 🎼 of life to all who are touched by him.

Blessings to your family at this time. What a miracle it was that I was able to have my moment in time with him. Wonder which Heavenly Doc he’s instructed on his rules?

Dance with the angels, Mr. Derry, God bless, and HOOK EM
