Marion Glover Gray III, 73, of Kerrville, passed away peacefully in San Antonio, April 29, 2026, with his family by his side. Marion was born to John and Marion Gray on October 5, 1952, in Mobile, Alabama. He grew up in the piney woods of Fulton and Jackson, Alabama with two older brothers, Wyatt and Michael, and younger sister, Brenda; and spent days on end in the woods of Bolentown camping with his friends.

Marion was a proud graduate of Marion Miltary Institute in Marion, Alabama, in 1971. He received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry at Emory University in Atlanta and went on to earn a master’s degree in geology at Emory.

Marion spent the bulk of his career working as a geophysicist in the oil and gas industries. He started his career at Texaco and worked at Forrest Oil and Newfield Exploration before establishing his own oil and gas exploration operations. He served for nearly 50 years as a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. In addition, Marion was highly involved in the timber industry in Alabama and Texas and was a longtime member of the Texas Forestry Association.

Marion was blessed with two beautiful sons, Ryan and Chase; and not long after, he met the love of his life, Judy, who brought along two daughters, Jennifer and Stephanie. Marion and Judy were married on February 24, 1994, in The Woodlands, TX, and they truly were soulmates. They loved, laughed, and spent time traveling the world, sharing their love with family and friends. There is no such thing as a perfect marriage, but theirs was close to it.

Marion loved the outdoors. He loved the ocean and received his commercial captaincy license from the Chapman School of Seamanship in 2004. He loved to run and completed marathons, ran with his dog Prissy, and walked countless miles of river trails. Marion loved to hike in the Colorado Rockies with Judy and spend time on their ranch in the Hill Country. Marion loved his family- his kids and grand-girls were his greatest joy.

Marion Glover Gray III is preceded in death by his parents, John Michael Gray and Marion Glover Gray, brothers Wyatt and Michael, and his beloved dog Prissy. He is survived by his wife, Judy, sons Ryan (Tracy) and Chase (Stephanie), daughters Jennifer and Stephanie, granddaughters, Olivia, Ashlyn, Autumn, and “Ivy” Marion Glover Gray IV, and sister Brenda (Charlie) as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and grandnieces and grandnephews.

"Judy, I am sorry that you have lost your dear husband. I remember seeing the two of you walking into the mall, holding hands and laughing together. You looked like teenagers who were just falling in love. It is a sight that I’ve never forgotten. A reminder to live every day showing your love. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers as you move through the coming days. Your PEO sister, Robin Hale"
