Markeeta Sue (Leonard) Edwards went to be with her Lord on May 12, 2026, after a sudden illness. She was born on November 23, 1953, in Littlefield, Texas. She graduated as valedictorian from Spade High School and attended Baylor University where she earned her BS in Nursing with honors. She married Douglas Edwards in 1976, spending much of their nearly 50 years of marriage together in Cleburne, Texas, and later in Kerrville, Texas.

Markeeta was a calming, steady presence in the lives of anyone fortunate to know her. As a career nurse, she showed her love and demonstrated her faith by taking care of others. Her quiet strength and compassionate spirit brought unwavering comfort to her patients, friends, and family.

Markeeta enjoyed exploring God’s creation, traveling with Doug and their dogs (Gus, Arya, and now Roxie) to state and national parks, and searching out America’s waterfalls. She was deeply invested in the lives of her grandchildren, making time for them, showing up for them, and creating lasting memories including much anticipated “10-year-old trips” with each grandchild.

She was a devoted Christian, and cherished member of her church homes including College Heights Baptist Church in Cleburne and First Baptist Church in Kerrville, serving in multiple roles as a Sunday School teacher, group leader, and pianist (when absolutely necessary). She modeled Christ in her daily walk as wife, mother, Grammy, nurse, and volunteer, and spent some of her final moments in scripture.

She is survived by her beloved husband Doug Edwards; children, Kasey Daniel and husband Michael of Amarillo, Texas, Shelby Peschel and husband Scott of Kerrville, Texas, Lindsey Storey and husband Brandon of Clarksville, Tennessee, Cory Edwards and wife Evie of San Antonio, Texas; twelve beloved grandchildren, Payton, Aaron, Alayna, Caleb, Allison, Ellen, Leah, Mary-Kate, Nathan, Carter, Elyse, and Caris; brother, Lee Leonard and wife Ginger of Lubbock, Texas; and numerous friends and colleagues. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leon and Eula Mae Leonard of Littlefield, Texas; brother, Johnny Leonard of Lubbock, Texas; and her beloved Aunt Lucy.

Services will be on Sunday, May 24, at 3pm at First Baptist Church of Kerrville with Joey Tombrella officiating.  Family will receive visitors in a brief reception in the FBC fellowship hall following the service to share memories. Guests are encouraged to wear yellow, which was unquestionably Markeeta’s favorite color.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to The Pregnancy Resource Center in Kerrville where Markeeta served as the president of the board and dedicated volunteer and prayer advocate for several years.
