"My Charlie was fiercely loving. I attended a parent orientation at Schreiner University in 2017, where he introduced the concept of a “Blackhawk helicopter parent” as a metaphor for a particular way of fiercely loving one’s child. What stayed with me was not simply the metaphor itself, but the way he helped parents feel safe in their role as parents. Over the next four years, I watched from a distance as he served as a surrogate parent to the students entrusted to his care, demonstrating that same devotion again and again. He modeled a kind of leadership rooted in care, presence, and genuine concern for the people around him. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to tell him what that meant to me while he was still here. And I know that his love for Jude remains fierce."
