Lynda grew up dancing in the Houston Ballet and swimming competitively. Instead of going to Lamar High School, like most of her friends in the Braes Heights neighborhood, she elected to go to the ''brand new'' Bellaire High School. She spoke fondly of her time as a Bellaire Belle. She graduated in 1958. She then attended the University of Texas, where she swam, pledged Delta Zeta Sorority, and was selected as a Kappa Alpha Southern Belle. She returned to Houston from college to work at Marathon Oil Company, where she met the love of her life, Ray. She and Ray had two children, Lou and Mark. They lived for many years in Briargrove Park and were also long-time members of Southwest United Methodist Church. Lynda was a member and active participant in the United Methodist Women group.
Lynda was an avid tennis player. Lynda began playing in her early 30's, and she excelled at the sport. She spent much time playing tennis in the various leagues in Houston, later becoming the president of the Houston Ladies Tennis Association. Not only did she love to play the sport, she and Ray often traveled to watch tennis. They were fans of the Davis Cup as well as Grand Slam events, most notably the U.S. Open.
Lynda loved to travel. As a child, she went on long road trips with her parents, stopping at every state in the continental United States. As an adult, she completed the circuit by visiting Alaska and Hawaii. She and Ray traveled internationally and had many stories about the places they went and the cultures they experienced. Lynda's motto was ''go now, you never know when you will get another chance.''
Lynda quilted. It was more than a hobby to her. She spent her later years involved daily in quilting bees and charitable organizations. She was a lifetime member of the Hill Country Quilt Guild, a member of the Giver Connection, a former member of the Be Ready Bee, and an avid supporter of the Marketplace for the Quilt Show. She was instrumental in organizing and promoting the donation of quilts for the Christian Women's Job Corps and the 3HRanch for boys. She was the impetus for the Giver Connection's donation of quilts at the Doyle Community Center to high school graduates.
Most of all, Lynda loved her family, her faith, and her dogs.
Lynda was preceded in death by her parents.
Her survivors include her husband, Ray Fern Thompson; her daughter, Lou Thompson Black and her husband, John Milton Black; her son, Mark Vernon Thompson and his wife, Lisa Abell Thompson; and granddaughters, Asher Elizabeth Thompson, Catherine Jane Thompson and Lily Collier Black.
A memorial and burial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on April 8, 2023, at the Garden of Memories Cemetery. A reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Ray F. Thompson Endowed Scholarship at Texas Christian University.

I am so sorry for your loss. Lynda was always a bright light, wherever she was. I know that she will be missed at the Hill Country Quilt Guild. I know that I will miss seeing Lynda.

Lynda was so active in our quilt guild doing wonderful things for the children of the Kerrville community. I was so surprised at her passing and so sad at our loss. She leaves a huge void. My prayers go out to her family and friends.
