He was raised in Corpus Christi, Texas, known as Billy and later Bill. He spent his early years fishing, sailing, surfing, and playing in Corpus Christi Bay. He spent this time with his younger brother Charles. The duo appeared from the outside to have legendary fights with one another. However, they were fiercely loyal to each other and would unite against adversaries.
His maternal grandfather, the Rev. Charles R. McKean, pastored a church in Mexico City. Bill spent many summers there, which stimulated a love for foreign languages. He had an affinity for languages and took pride in deconstructing a foreign word to find its meaning. Throughout his life, this linguistic capability allowed him to reach and serve a broader group in the community.
After graduating from W.B. Ray High School, Bill attended Del Mar Junior College and later transferred to the University of Texas to complete his BS and MS degrees. He spent summers working in the oil fields of West Texas and in the cafeteria at the university to make his way through college. He met Baylor student Frances ''Francie'' Wood on a blind date set up by friends (truly a blind date as she didn't have her glasses), beginning a friendship that lasted the rest of his life.
He enjoyed fixing things, if it was broken, he was going to figure out how to fix it and try to make it better. Orthopaedic Surgery was never a job to him, it was who he was. He knew from the first surgery he conducted at the age of 8 on his teddy bear that he had found his calling. His desire was to help people, and Orthopaedics was a natural fit.
Bill was accepted into medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Medical School San Antonio. He married Frances, and the two started a family while Bill was in medical school. He is a Class of 1973 graduate who interned from 1973 to 1974 in surgery and completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery from 1974-1978.
Dr. Allen moved his family to Kerrville, Texas, in 1978 to begin his medical practice. He worked long hours at the Sid Peterson Memorial Hospital Emergency Room and spent countless hours on call. For many years, Dr. Allen was the only orthopaedic surgeon in Kerrville. He later moved his practice to a pasture in Kerrville South on Hill Country Drive. The lonely building slowly attracted neighbors throughout the years. Eventually, the Peterson Regional Medical Center moved from downtown to its current location just a couple of blocks down the street. The barren field from the 1970s is now home to physicians and specialists of all types, bringing the highest quality healthcare available to the region's residents.
He devoted his life to Kerrville. He served on numerous boards of directors in all parts of the community. Some were: the Arthritis Counsel of Kerrville, the Kerr County Soccer Association, the Community Joint Replacement Group, and the Sid Peterson Memorial Hospital. He served on the board and as medical director for the Kerrville and Kerr County Emergency Medical Services. He mentored, taught, and managed emergency first responders to provide the highest medical care to his friends and neighbors outside the hospital.
He was instrumental in bringing youth soccer to Kerr County youth. Dr. Allen and his wife Francie began coaching the Rattlers in 1981. While she focused on strategy and game planning, he focused on instruction and skill development. His drive to help everyone was reflected in a newspaper interview, he said, ''We have tried to maintain the philosophy that everyone plays. We have balanced coaching. We try to make it a fun time for the kids and parents too.'' In the Fall of 1986, the Rattlers won the league championship in legendary fashion.
He would spend Friday nights in the fall riding the pine in the stands to support his children in the marching band and cheerleading. His children knew they could always count on looking up into the stands and knowing he was there supporting them. If there was an injury on the football field, you would see him jogging from the stands down to the field to care for the injured athlete.
Dr. Allen served as an assistant Scout Master where he could continue developing future generations. He spent many weekends on campouts and even took a troop to Philmont Scout Ranch for a 10-day outdoor adventure. He mentored his daughter's girl scout troop to help them attain all their outdoor badges. He grew up sailing and passed that love of the water on to his children, but he really came into his own when he found horses. If there was a trail ride, he was probably on it and working as part of the medical support and/or the guides.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Frances (Wood) Allen, of Kerrville; son, Peyton Allen, and wife Debra, of Grapevine, Texas; daughter, Pamelyn Nennmann, and husband, Michael, of Haslet, Texas; daughter, Jessamyn Putnam, and husband Chris, of Spicewood, Texas; grandchildren, Kelly, Daniel, Avery, August, Liam, Connor, Anson; brother, Dr. Charles Allen, and wife Dawn, of Corpus Christi, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, June 3, 2023, at Grimes Funeral Chapels, with Dr. Chris Putnam leading a life reflection.

I was 16, riding a motorcycle and had a serious accident on Main Street in Junction. I was taken to Junction hospital where I listened to the doctor tell my parents my left leg was gone below the knee. A call to SPMH and my father spoke with Dr. Allen who told him to get me there asap. It was all like a bad dream with the trauma and pain meds but when I came to I found my left leg was still attached thanks to Dr. Allens skills. Fast forward about 8 years and a stainless pin migrates out of my left ankle, I see Dr. Cochran an orthopedic in Midland. He looks at my X rays and asked who had rebuilt my ankle and leg, I tell him Dr. Allen. Cochran tells me I was lucky, he along with many other orthopedic doctors would have removed it due to the extent of the damage and he was amazed it was holding up so well.
Many thanks Dr. and we will meet again on the other side.

Bill made a big impression on me right from the start. I had been practicing in a big city for almost 15 years when I moved to Kerrville in 1998. I was given a tour of the OR (old hospital of course) and Bill was getting ready to scrub for his case and he walked up with a big smile and outstretched arm for a warm welcome. Certainly not what I expected, coming from the typical competitive medical climate in a large city.
Deepest condolences to the family and gratitude to a fine doctor and person.

My first encounter with Dr. Allen came when he replaced my 94 year old mother's left knee. At that time, we understood her to be his oldest patient. I was concerned about her having this done at such an advanced age. However, Dr. Allen showed no doubt about her age or his ability to do the job. AND he was right. His calm, assured presence was a blessing and she came through with flying colors and lived to use it another 3 years, making the quality of the end of her life much better. All our family stayed as his patients until he retired. He made a significant impact not only on individual lives but also the life of this community. He has been and will continue to be miss by so many. Thanks be to God for the gift of his life.

Bill Allen was a classmate of mine in medical school in San Antonio. Everyone has a fun story about Bill as he was a friend to all! Smart, mature, good natured, always had an infectious sense of happiness about him! I did a rotation in orthopedics with Bill and it was such a great experience being with him. I will always remember him with fond memories! My condolences to Francis and the whole Allen clan!

A good friend from way back. He had that "human touch". He always greeted everyone in the room. He was a true beacon shinning bright, an outstanding person who made a mark. He lit up the room. Let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

We moved to Kerrville in 1989 and quickly found Dr. Allen for our family. He fit our 3-yr-old son with a bar brace and continued to watch over him and treat him throughout his life, including 13 intense years of soccer. He also treated me many times, then when my parents moved to Kerrville in 2003, he became their doctor as well. 3 generations of us: kids, adults, females, males loved him immensely. His Cheshire grin: all teeth showing, his calm manner and slow advice for emphasis when needed, his wit and great sense of humor were all the VERY best, in addition to his skills! Working with him at Peterson for about 8 years was a highlight and a blessing, too!. He will be terribly missed in the Hill Country. Condolences to his wonderful family as well as his devoted office staff who loved him: Sandy, Marti, and Jackie.

I had the pleasure of working for Dr. Allen and Francie for 38 years. They both were exceptional employers and always took care of us. I was fortunate to get to know Peyton, Pamelyn and Jessamyn and watch them become successful adults. Francie and Dr. Allen raised a beautiful family together. The medical community has lost an excellent, caring physician and he will be missed. Prayers for the entire family during this time and may you find peace in knowing that he dedicated his life to you and his patients.

I was an undergraduate student at Schreiner University, and very unsure of what career to pursue in healthcare. Dr. Allen was kind enough to let me spend some time in his office to gain perspective. In that short time, he helped me to see the pros and cons of becoming a surgeon and was very honest about the negatives. But, he showed me that the positives far outweigh the negatives. It was clear that he was guided by his heart and drive to help others. I will never forget the lessons I learned from Dr. Allen and I carry those pearls of wisdom in my career as an academic surgeon. My sincerest condolences

Dr. Allen was one of the best doctors I worked with when I lived in Kerrville. He was great with his patients, and they did well. His nickname for me was "The Swedish Meatball" because I'd bring my family recipe meatballs to our frequent potlucks on 4B at SPMH. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. I will remember him with a lot of great memories. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

I have so many precious memories of Dr.Allen! In my younger years he was a God send for my sister! He made house calls to check on my sister out of the kindness of his heart! She loved and respected him for taking care of her for many years. He even insisted on me taking his jacket during a rainy soccer game! He will be missed by many! R. I.P to one of the greats!

My name is Maureen. I was Dr Allen’s very first HOSA student. He had just opened his practice in a small office on the first floor of Sid Pete. It feels like a lifetime ago. He would tease me and my Philadelphia accent. Dr. Allen is the reason I am an RN today. My first love is acute inpatient rehab medicine & wound care. I am a Daisy Honoree. I owe my love of nursing to a man who loved medicine. He showed me patience and compassion. The world lost a good man, doctor, mentor & confidant. I will treasure his memory and miss his infectious smile.
I will keep you in my prayers, Mrs. Allen, Payton, Pamlyn & Jess.
My heart is breaking...

I was blessed enough to be a floor nurse at SPMH and the new hospital which allowed me to know Dr. Allen. Through the years he became like a family member. Some of my favorite memories are our discussions in the parking lot about life and he always ended our conversations with him giving me advice. He taught me many things as a young nurse but my most favorite memory will always be the day he taught me to shoot rubber bands at the nurses station on 6th floor. I am truly sorry for your loss. He will be dearly missed. You are all in my prayers.
