Alton was born in San Angelo, Texas on May 7, 1946, to Melvin and Lorine Hoelscher Braden. Alton was raised in Reagan County in the farming community of St. Lawrence. He graduated from Garden City High School and attended the Connally Technical Institute of Texas A&M University in Waco, Texas to become certified in Aircraft Mechanics.
Alton married his beloved wife of 55 years, Joyce Ann Halfmann on August 24, 1968, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Olfen, Texas. They began their married life together in San Angelo, Texas where Alton worked at the Mitsubishi factory as an aircraft mechanic, eventually becoming a crew chief. In 1977, Alton returned to St. Lawrence, Texas, where he and Joyce raised their children, grew cotton, and operated a construction company. In 1987, the family moved to Garden City, Texas and Alton worked for TXDOT and finally returned to his love of aircraft mechanics, working in the Midland/Odessa airport, until his health no longer allowed, and then retired to Kerrville, Texas in 2005.
Alton loved his family and was quick to tell everyone about his pride and joy, his children, their spouses, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He greatly enjoyed farming, anything to do with airplanes, deer hunting, and woodworking, as well as going on fishing and rockhounding trips with Joyce. He was very mechanically inclined and loved teaching his children and grandchildren all about his talents and hobbies, especially since he was no longer able to do many physical tasks after the onset of Meniere's Disease with extreme vertigo in 1999.
Alton is survived by his wife Joyce, their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren: Joan McCleery and husband Patric (Katy McCleery), Jimmy Braden and wife Kimberly (Amber Coonrod and husband Corbin (Case Coonrod) and Ashton Braden), Cody Braden and wife Jana (Brittany Lytle and husband Jacob (Kinslee and Justin Lytle) and Jimmy Wayne Braden), Melinda Kuhlmann and husband Kevin (Kyle and Paige Kuhlmann), and Anthony Braden and wife Nicole (Timothy and Wesley Braden). Additionally, Alton is survived by his sisters Melva Halfmann and husband Wilbert, Marilyn Moeller and husband Dalton; sisters-in-law, Debborah Braden, Vernell Kleypas, Waldeen Halfmann, and Dorothy Bolen, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Lorine Braden; in-laws, Anton and Alice Halfmann; brother, Arnold Braden; brothers-in-law, Ervin Kleypas, Hilmer Halfmann, Jerry Bolen; and nephew, Randy Bolen.
