Betty Jane Bailey Burton, a proud fifth-generation Texan, passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 23, 2025. She was born on December 6, 1944, in San Antonio, Texas, and spent much of her life in the Texas Hill Country.
She grew up in Harper, Texas, where her father, Edward Bailey, was the Harper ISD superintendent and the owner of the local Gulf gas station and gun shop. Her mother, Jane, worked at the USDA in Kerrville. Betty grew up with three sisters, Pat Hopf, Georgia Bailey, and Virginia Noah, and a brother, Marshall Bailey.
From an early age, Betty was a gifted seamstress and clothing designer; she poured her passion into creating countless costumes for productions at The Hill Country Arts Foundation - Point Theatre in Ingram, Texas. Her artistry and dedication brought characters to life on stage, leaving a lasting impression on the local arts community, especially the adults and youth who were in the plays on stage.
Over the years, she created works of art for The Lutheran Coronation (San Antonio) and The San Antonio Fiesta Coronation, along with hundreds of wedding dresses she felt privileged to design.
Having deep roots in Texas, Betty was a serious history buff and an avid reader who found immense satisfaction in sharing her knowledge with her family and friends. Her love of history and the Hill Country led to years of support and advocacy for the Retired Texas Rangers Association, the Hill Country Sheep and Goat Raisers' Association, the VA Historical Costume Archives, and The Kerr County Historical Commission's Anniversary costumed re-enactments.
In later years, Betty married Allie B. Burton, a retired Air Force officer. For many years they split their time between their Edward County ranch and their home near Ingram, raising Brangus cattle and operating exotic game hunting.
Betty's legacy lives on through her family and the many lives she touched with her desire to help others through Christ. She loved her church community and the many ladies in her Bible study groups over the years. Betty loved fiercely, putting her family first. Her cooking, master gardening skills, goat whispering, creative problem-solving, painting, and her sage advice will all be missed beyond measure.
She is survived by her husband, Allie B. Burton; children, Clayton & Janell Itz, Pollyanna Itz, and Georgieanna Itz & Michael Platt, Will Burton, Lucy Burton & Mike Boster; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; sisters, Pat Hopf, Georgia Bailey, and Virginia Noah and brother, Marshall Bailey; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Celebration of Life services will be held at the Kerrville Church of Christ on Saturday, March 29, 2025. Viewing and reception from 1-2p, service begins at 2p, followed by a family burial at the Glen Rest Cemetery.
Donations can be made in lieu of flowers to: The Kerrville Church of Christ & The Hill Country Arts Foundation.
