Frances Real Stevens, 99, passed away on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, in Hunt, Texas. She was born in Kerrville to Esther R. Real and Felix R. Real on June 14, 1925. A descendant of German pioneers, Frances attended Tivy High School, graduating in 1942 as Class Valedictorian. She was the first drum major of the Tivy Band and was known for her acrobatic twirling. In 1946, she graduated Phi Beta Kappa at the University of Texas in Austin. She married her high school sweetheart and recent Naval Academy graduate, Ensign Jack Marion Stevens, USN, on June 12, 1946, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Kerrville.
As a Navy wife, Frances traveled the world, living in places from Honolulu to Naples Italy, including Maine, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Virginia, Florida, California, and Texas. At every duty station, she volunteered, counseling fellow Navy wives.
After Jack retired in 1976, he and Frances settled near Hunt, Texas, on family land, where they lived for forty-seven years. She loved the land and together they would work their cattle, cut cedar, take walks, and host family and friends in their Hill Country haven. They were members of the German Club and other dance groups, enjoying Big Band music and dancing. Frances was a member of the Turtle Creek Sewing Circle and several bridge groups.
Frances was preceded in death by her parents, Felix and Esther Real, her sisters, Ella Fisher, Huldah Cunningham, Edna Priour, Meta Syfan, and brother, Felix Real Jr., and her loving husband of 77 years, Jack Stevens.
Survivors include her sister, Elma Real Acree; her children, Jack M. Stevens, Jr. (Lesle), Susan Stevens Crummel (Richard), and Janet Stevens; grandchildren, Christie, Michael, Jason, Courtney, Lindsey, Blake, Jackie, and Dani; and great-grandchildren, Sophia, Matthew, Lily, McKinley, Jaxson, Dylan, Margot, Addison, Jackson, Ellen Frances, and Rafe.
A memorial service will be held at 6 PM on Saturday, June 14, 2025 (which would have been her 100th birthday) at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 320 St. Peter Street, Kerrville, Texas. A reception will follow at Tucker Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hill Country Youth Ranch, St. Peter's Episcopal Church, or the charity of your choice.
