Joann Abernathy Hudson, 93, of Boerne, Texas, passed away June 15, 2025. Born October 28, 1931, in Oklahoma City, OK, she was a descendant of early pioneer families to the Oklahoma Territory, and the daughter of Lester M. and Una Sticken Abernathy. She graduated from Classen High School in Oklahoma City in 1949 and from the University of Oklahoma in 1953 with a B.A. degree in Spanish. At O.U. she was president of Sigma Delta Pi, National Spanish Honor Society and the Pan American Club.

She met her future husband, J.R. ''Dick'' Hudson while attending O.U. On April 30, 1954, the couple married and moved to Houston where Dick began a 34 year career with Shell Oil Co. and Joann taught high school Spanish until having children and becoming a full-time mother.

Joann was a dedicated and loving homemaker and pursued many outside interests. She was a member of American Association of University Women, and served AAUW chapters in every state where the family lived. Joann also belonged to Presbyterian women's circles, and volunteered at schools and hospitals. She was also an accomplished baker, and was known for her award-winning jams and preserves. She was a wonderful example to her children and grandchildren of a strong, organized, compassionate, and intellectually curious woman.

After a career that took the couple and their three children to Illinois, New York, New Orleans, Tulsa and back to Houston, Joann and Dick retired to Kerrville in 1987 and built their home at Tierra Linda. Both were members of First Presbyterian Church where Dick served as elder and coordinator of Pastoral care. While living in Kerrville, Joann was a member and past officer of the Major James Kerr chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. With her husband she was a member of the Friends of Mount Vernon, Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and President's Associates of the University of Oklahoma.

In 2018, Joann moved to Morningside Ministries at Menger Springs in Boerne, where she enjoyed many friends and activities.

Joann was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Carolyn Sue; and by her husband of 55 years, J.R. ''Dick'' Hudson.

She is survived by daughters, Andrea Hudson and Sylvia Maggio; son, John R. Hudson (Sandra); grandchildren, Nicholas Maggio (Bennett), Caitlin Maggio Hodges (Joseph), Benjamin Hudson, Matthew Hudson and William Hudson; and 2 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services and burial will be June 22, 2025, at Rose Hill Cemetery in Oklahoma City. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled for a future date in Boerne.

Memorial gifts may be made to The American Cancer Society or The American Heart Association, or the charity of your choice.

Dear Andrea, Sylvia, John,

I share your grief. We had just visited by phone a few days ago. She seemed well and did not mention any problems, seeming to be her usual, cheerful self. So, I was shocked to see this obituary.

You may not know or remember, she was on of my bride's maids and Dick (your dad) was our best man. Joan held my hand as I prepared to leave Houston with 3 month old Carla to join my husband on Okinawa. You were all (?) rocked in a chair which I still own. And there are many other remembrances that could be shared.

Please accept my sincere condolences for this loss of a fine and faithful mother and friend.

Fondly,

Clarice B. Amann
