Born April 26, 1947, in Edinburg, he was the son of Annette Closner Clancey and Donald Rex Clancey.
Mr. Clancey grew up attending public schools and graduating from Edinburg High School. He was a competitive athlete and excelled in tennis and golf. As an avid sportsman, he also loved hunting seasons for dove, ducks, geese and deer. He later attended UT Pan American University before enlisting in the Army in 1967. During his deployment to Vietnam, he sustained a head wound, in 1968, finally returning home for a lengthy recuperation. During this time he was involved in a motor vehicle accident that left him a paraplegic. In December of 1984, Mr. Clancey married the former Evelyn Barie Hale and later were blessed with a daughter, Lizabeth Ann Clancey. Over time, Mr. Clancey spent much of his life in the various VA hospitals; the longest stint being 14 years at the Kerrville VA where he knew practically all the staff members by their first name. In 2015, Mr. Clancey was fortunate enough to attend his 50th Edinburg High School reunion. He certainly enjoyed getting reacquainted and reminiscing with his former classmates.
Mr. Clancey had an excellent memory, always recalling historical family dates that other family members couldn't remember. He also had a voracious appetite for reading. There wasn't a day go by that he didn't have a newspaper and a book nearby. And let's not forget all the western shows we grew up with; his favorite being Gunsmoke. He was also complimentary of folks he met, always complimenting either dress, jewelry, or just a pretty smile; always a handshake for the men. When asked about how he was doing, he responded he was doing well considering, but his life was, and always has been, in the hands of the Lord.
Mr. Clancey was preceded in death by his parents and wife. Survivors include his two brothers, George Douglas Clancey (Kaye) of San Saba County and John Closner Clancey (Shirley) of Edinburg; a daughter, Lizabeth Ann Clancey (Scott Roche) of San Antonio; grandchildren Heather Christine Roche, Angel Barie Roche, and Scott Roche, Jr.; nephew Sean Douglas Clancey of San Saba County, and niece April Brittany Simmons of Essex, Maryland; great-nieces Mikayla Nicole Clancey and Clarissa Faith Clancey of San Saba County and AizLynn Evangeline Simmons of Essex, Maryland; and great-nephews Nathan Damien Simmons and Ryan Dale Simmons, Jr. of Essex, Maryland.
Viewing for Mr. Clancey will be held from 10 AM-4 PM, on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at Grimes Funeral Chapels in Kerrville.
Service and burial will be conducted at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio on Thursday, September 4, 2025, at Shelter #5 at 1:45 p.m.

Rex and I served together in different parts of Vietnam during the 1967/68 period. My most memorable and gratifying flying missions was helping “troops in combat “ for Army and Marine troops in a bad situation.
Rex paid an enormous price for the freedoms we enjoy today. Many are still paying .
Rest in peace, Rex
