Carrol Dwain Shick, 89, of Kerrville, TX, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on September 16, 2025. He was born in Lamesa, TX to Lynn and Eudora Shick on June 7, 1936. He married Rose Mary Watters on August 6, 1959, in Brownsville, TX.
Carrol attended school in Hatch, NM and graduated from Hatch Valley High School in 1954. After graduation, he served in the United States Navy for 4 years. He met Rose Mary while serving in the Navy. She worked at the Western Union in Corpus Christi where he would send messages home to his parents. After his service in the Navy and his marriage to Rose Mary, they moved to Farmington, NM where he worked as a technician with the telephone company. Over the next 38 years, he transferred with the telephone company throughout New Mexico, finally settling in Artesia. He retired in 1995 and moved to Kerrville, TX in 1999.
Carrol was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years Rose Mary, parents Lynn and Eudora Shick, sister Muriel Freeman and husband Kenneth from El Mirage, AZ, and sister Lynnita Massengill Dejarnett widowed by husband JS Massengill and Edward DeJarnett from Silver City, NM.
Survivors include his children: son Glenn Shick and wife Kathy of Corpus Christi, TX, daughter Gayle Usherwood and husband Ron of Kerrville, TX, son Gerald Shick of Midland, TX and daughter Geneice Brame and husband Danny of Dryden, TX. Grandchildren include Kristin Lindner and husband Stephen of Lubbock, TX, Corey Shick and wife Kim of Corpus Christi, TX, Casey Shick and wife Erica of Corpus Christi, TX, Blayne Shick and wife Sharan of Mesa, AZ, Danny Brame and wife Danielle of Lubbock, TX, Aubany Kuschyk and husband Kyle of Midland, TX. Great-grandchildren include Caira Johnson, Lana Johnson, Skylar Shick, Hadley Shick, Callie Shick, Waylon Shick, Lazarus Brame and Matthew Lindner. He also has many nieces and nephews.
Carrol's interests included collecting pecans in his yard with his great-grandkids, making sure the deer that visited his yard had plenty of corn to eat, fishing, family game nights and playing pool at his daughter's house. He loved to do woodwork. He built a wedding arch for his daughter and changing tables for his grandchildren. But his favorite project was building toyboxes. He made toyboxes for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He also made step stools for any of them that asked.
Visitation will be Sunday, September 21, 2025, from 6:00 to 7:00 pm and Chapel Service will be Monday September 22, 2025, 10:00 am at Grimes Funeral Chapels, 728 Jefferson St., Kerrville, TX. Graveside service to follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery, 3250 Fredericksburg Rd., Kerrville, TX. Pallbearers will be Carrol's grandchildren.
